Steam train journey in Vietnam - a journey through time in a class of its own

In recent years, these historic gems have been painstakingly restored by the remaining steam locomotive engineers of the state railway company using original spare parts. Preparations are now almost complete to welcome tourists and visitors on board these unique time-travelling trains. The inaugural journeys are planned for the end of 2024 or early 2025.

The nostalgic steam train journey in Vietnam leads from the central Vietnamese coastal town of Da Nangknown for its idyllic beaches and luxurious resorts, to the former imperial city of Hue with its countless magnificent palaces and majestic imperial tombs. Each of the two trains has two retro-style passenger carriages, a cosy dining carriage and a luggage carriage.

The interior is a real feast for the eyes and revives the splendour of the former French colonial era. Fine mahogany furniture, gold-coloured accents and decorative tiling celebrate the glamour of that era. Large, all-round windows give travellers an unforgettable panoramic view of the picturesque landscape passing by. As the steam train passes the famous rolling hills of the Hai Van coastal mountains with their lush, green vegetation and steams through the charming fishing village of Lang Co, the marvellous views transport you to a bygone era.

However, it is not only the authentic décor that brings history to life - the staff are also expected to be dressed in period costumes. At the railway station, an army-style brass band greets arriving guests with a musical welcome as in the days of colonial rule. At each stop on the route, travellers can also expect a themed restaurant, such as an imperial-style restaurant in Hue or an independence bistro in Lang Co.

Vietnam's chequered history

In fact, Vietnam declared its independence from France on 2 September 1945, a demand that was not recognised by either France or the USA. On the contrary, the Americans even supported France with military equipment in the fight against the Vietnamese rebels. In 1954, Vietnam was finally divided by the Geneva Accords - into a communist-ruled north and a south supported by the USA. This conflict led to the bloody Vietnam War, which lasted for years and cost the lives of over 1.3 million soldiers and 1 million civilians on all sides.

The devastating war ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon (today Ho-Chi-Minh-City) and the reunification of the country under communist rule. Today, numerous tourist attractions are reminders of Vietnam's eventful past - from war memorials to ancient buildings and citadels, which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. One of the most important historical sites is the imperial city of Hue, which is a central stop on the nostalgic steam train journey and gives visitors a fascinating insight into the glorious times of the Vietnamese monarchy.

We invite you to experience Vietnam's fascinating history up close on this unique steam train journey through history. Be enchanted by the nostalgic splendour and immerse yourself in a bygone era. Book early, as the limited places for this exclusive experience are in high demand!
