In the early hours of the morning, when the temple is still filled with peace and tranquillity, the full magic of this unique landmark in the heart of Angkor Thom unfolds. The majestic towers with their faces carved in stone radiate a mysterious aura that transports you back in time.
You will then delve deeper into the walled city of Angkor Thom, a masterpiece of King Jayavarman VII. As you cross the ornate bridge representing the Milky Ocean, you will learn more about the impressive history of this city. The exploration takes you to the Terrace of the Leper King and the Elephant Terrace, where you will be fascinated by the detailed architecture. Another highlight in Angkor Thom is the renovated Baphuon Temple, which impresses with its size and significance.
After this exploration tour, you will reach the highlight of the day: Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world. After a hearty breakfast at 8 am, we set off on an exciting journey off the beaten track to the historic town of Phnom Kulen. This impressive place marks the beginning of the "Age of Angkor" and is one of only two places in Cambodia where Buddha is said to have lived.
The journey takes about two hours and takes you along the national highway and scenic country roads, passing charming villages and lush rice paddies that offer great views as we approach the top of the mountain.
Phnom Kulen, located around 40 kilometres north-east of Siem Reap, is revered as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer empire. During the construction of the majestic temples, sandstones were transported from this sacred mountain to Angkor, and for the Khmer, Kulen is the holiest mountain in Cambodia.
Once we reach the top, the impressive riverbed of the 1000 Lingas and Yoni awaits, divided into three harbours for the Hindu trinity and decorated with unique ancient carvings. A climb to the top of the hill reveals the Buddhist pagoda and the large reclining Buddha sculpture, which invites you to marvel. We then visit the impressive waterfalls of Kulen, where we can stop at two picturesque spots to enjoy a refreshing dip. Afterwards, the trail takes us to a breathtaking viewpoint known as Poeng Ta Khu or Poeng Chruonh, where you can admire the spectacular scenery of the cliffs.
You return to your hotel at around 2 pm, where you can spend the rest of the day as you wish. A day full of discoveries and fascinating insights into the history and art of Angkor is drawing to a close.
