The food was exquisite and more than we could eat. After a short, comfortable journey, you will reach the Van Long Nature Reserve. Here, you will swap the vehicle for a traditional bamboo rowing boat. Your local rower will take you quite silently and at your own pace through the expansive wetland. Van Long is not only a scenic jewel, but also an important sanctuary for rare animal species. A real hidden gem in the Mekong Delta requires an early start, but we promise you: it is worth it. At around 5:30 am, your private guide will pick you up. While the city is still sleeping, you glide across the river on your own boat to the Cai Rang floating market. This allows you to experience this fascinating, vibrant trading hub in its most authentic form, long before the large tour groups arrive.
Your guide cleverly navigates you through the maze of wooden boats. Sample your way through the delta's fruity variety directly on the water – from the creamy durian to the sweet jackfruit – right where the farmers offer them fresh from their plantations.
After this lively morning, your driver will comfortably take you on to Cai Be. The roughly one-and-a-half-hour journey through the lush green of the rice fields and palm-fringed dikes is a peaceful experience in its own right.
In Cai Be, you change back onto the water. A traditional boat takes you to a craft village. The subsequent trip by small sampan through the narrow channels overgrown with lush greenery is particularly charming. During a stop at a rice paper workshop, you not only watch how the glutinous rice is traditionally dried over a wood fire, but are often allowed to handle the wafer-thin sheets yourself.
For lunch, you will stop at a local restaurant chosen by us. In a relaxed atmosphere, your guide or the chef will show you how to roll the perfect Vietnamese spring rolls – a culinary highlight that you will surely want to recreate at home later.
Well-nourished, you will explore the island in a very special way: as a passenger on a scooter. Your guide, a true local, will drive you off the main roads and through the rural idyll.
