Health precautions for travelling to Vietnam

There is currently no mandatory vaccination requirement for entry into Vietnam. However, this regulation only applies to tourists travelling directly from Europe. It is important to emphasise that travellers from other regions may need to follow specific vaccination requirements or recommendations to enter Vietnam.

Although vaccination is not mandatory for tourists, it is still strongly recommended to seek careful medical advice before travelling. Through a comprehensive examination and individual risk assessment, health concerns can be identified in good time and appropriate protective measures can be taken to ensure a carefree and safe journey.

As responsible travellers, we should always be aware that travel conditions and regulations can change depending on the country of origin and the current health situation. It is therefore advisable to obtain up-to-date information from official sources such as the Federal Foreign Office or the World Health Organisation before departure and to follow it carefully. By being well informed and proactive, we can enjoy our travel experiences in Vietnam even more while protecting our own health and the health of the local community.

Vietnam vaccinations for your trip

Before travelling to Vietnam, we strongly recommend that you check that your vaccination record is up to date and that you have all the necessary vaccinations. Don't let possible illnesses worry you, as the majority of travellers return healthy from their trip to Vietnam. With the right precautions and the recommended Vietnam vaccinations, you can minimise the risk of illness and enjoy your trip carefree, explore the country's fascinating culture and impressive landscapes and have unforgettable experiences in Vietnam.

Recommended vaccinations for Vietnam
  • Hepatitis A and B: These vaccinations protect against infections caused by hepatitis viruses, which can be transmitted through contaminated food or water.
  • Typhoid fever: The typhoid vaccine offers protection against this bacterial infectious disease, which is transmitted through contaminated food or water.
  • Rabies: Vaccination against rabies is recommended for travellers who are staying in rural areas or who may have close contact with animals.
  • Japanese encephalitis: This vaccination is recommended if you spend a long time in rural areas or spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (whooping cough): A booster of this vaccination is often recommended before travelling in order to be protected against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

The vaccinations required for a holiday in Vietnam are often very individual and depend on various factors. These include personal health status as well as the country and region to be visited. The recommendations also vary depending on the type of holiday, as a package hotel holidaymaker, for example, has less to consider than an adventure tourist.

It is important to emphasise that vaccination recommendations are always based on individual circumstances. Depending on the country you are travelling to, the nature of your trip and your state of health, special vaccinations may be required. For this reason, it is advisable to speak to your doctor well in advance, ideally about six months before travelling. Some tropical immunisations may require several boosters within a certain period of time. Webseite des Auswärtigen Amts besuchen, um weitere Informationen zu erhalten.

Malaria

Although there is no vaccination against malaria, we would still like to draw your attention to this important health advice. Although the entire coastal areas, large city centres and flat delta areas are almost malaria-free, there is still a risk of malaria in Vietnam all year round. The infectious disease remains a serious matter, as although there are few malaria parasites, they are resistant to common prophylactics. It is therefore advisable to discuss with your doctor whether it might be advisable to take emergency medication with you, depending on your destination.

Tropical diseases are generally transmitted by mosquito bites, so you should not do without the usual protective measures. Spend the night under a mosquito net, use effective repellent sprays or special creams and wear light-coloured clothing outdoors, especially in the late evening hours. By following these precautions, you can minimise the risk of mosquito bites and protect your health during your stay in Vietnam.

Medical care in Vietnam

Medical care in Vietnam differs from European standards and it is important to be aware of this as a traveller. Often doctors and hospitals are not as well equipped and do not have the same level of qualified professionals as in Europe. Nevertheless, the larger cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offer quite good medical care, especially in international private clinics, which may be the best place for you as a traveller to go.

In the event of more serious medical concerns, it is advisable to contact the clinics in the larger cities if your condition allows you to travel there. A well-stocked first-aid kit can help you with first aid in such situations until you reach the next larger city. It is advisable to have valid health insurance cover that protects you against high treatment costs and, in the worst case, also covers repatriation. Comprehensive medical cover gives you the peace of mind and security you need while travelling through Vietnam.

First-aid kit for Vietnam

In Vietnam there are of course also pharmacies with a variety of common medicines. You will be able to buy most medicines in the cities. However, please bear in mind that the instructions for use for medicines purchased locally will often only be available in Vietnamese or, in the best case, perhaps in English. You will also need to explain your request to the pharmacist, who may not always be well trained.

To save yourself unnecessary stress, it is therefore worth bringing a few common medicines with you so that you don't have to visit a pharmacy for painkillers or cold remedies, for example. If you are travelling to rural areas, it is advisable to stock up on medication in advance that you can use in an emergency. This will ensure that you are well prepared and can access the medication you need if necessary. A well-stocked first-aid kit will give you the necessary security and certainty that you will be adequately cared for in the event of health problems while travelling.
